Testing Equipment

There are lots of cable testers that will carry out a check on a range of audio cables to find short circuits and broken wire. Typical connectors are XLR, Jack, RCA and Midi.

A Cable and Wire Tracer - including a sender and a detector - is designed to identify and trace wires or cables without damaging the insulation. By sending a signal down the wire being tested, you will be able to trace the wire with the detector probe. An audible tone will increase in volume as the probe gets closer to the wire.

This type of tester interfaces with BNC, RJ11, RJ45 CAT5 and LAN connectors. This will check out telephone wiring and computer network connectors. A simple check will then look for short circuits, broken wires and swapped wires.

This is a very versatile test instrument. It will show if two points are connected and also measure the resistance between them. It can also measure the insulation between two points although this insulation is measured at a fairly low voltage (Typically 5 volts).

These units range widely in price between about 10 GBP(15 USD) and many thousands. A versatile good quality unit suitable for everyday use can be bought for around 100 GBP (150 USD)
